Local Gymnastics Centers Owner Accused of Misconduct

Daniel Witenstein, the owner of Arizona Sunrays Gymnastics and Dance Center, has been suspended by USA Gymnastics in connection with allegations of sexual misconduct. He is on the organization’s list of suspended members pending a court hearing.

Witenstein owns gymnastics centers in northern Phoenix and Arcadia, which currently remain open for business, and has extensive national and international coaching experience. Arizona Sunrays has provided more than two decades of gymnastic programming for children as young as six months old.

There were no open investigations related to Witenstein. However, the Phoenix Police Department doesn’t disclose names of those who may be subject of criminal investigations until they are in custody.

This is the second time this year that an Arizona resident has been placed on USA Gymnastics’ suspended list. Alex Naddour, a 2016 Olympic bronze medalist from Queen Creek, was suspended back in June due to misconduct allegations.

Ever since the sexual abuse scandal of former women’s national team physician Larry Nassar, USA Gymnastics has been involved in national controversy. Nassar has been convicted earlier this year of sexually assaulting more than 100 victims and is now in prison.
